On November 1, 2007 Siðmennt presented its Humanist of the Year Award for the third time. The recipient this time was Tatjana Latinovic and Siðmennt recognized her outstanding and unselfish contributions to Icelandic society over the past decade. Tatjana who is from the former Yugoslavia, has worked primarily as a volunteer in a wide variety of human rights, women’s rights, and immigrants’ rights activities. Among other things, Tatjana was a founder and president of a women’s immigrant advocacy organization, a member of the board of the Intercultural Center, a member of the government’s Immigrant Council, and a member of the board of the Women’s Shelter.
Hope Knútsson, president of Siðmennt presented Tatjana with an award plaque and 2 books: „Women Without Superstition“ by Annie Laurie Gaylor, a collection of the writings of 51 strong, freethinking women of the 19th and 20th centuries, and Carl Sagan’s „Billions and Billions“ about the wonders of the universe, and the meaning of life and death from the viewpoint of a scientist, Freethinker, and Humanist. The award ceremony took place in Kaffi Reykjavík and Hörður Torfason, a prominent Icelandic social activist and musician performed several of his own songs about human rights.
