On Friday June 27, 2008, the Icelandic National Queer Organization (Samtökin 78) held its 30th anniversary celebration in the Reykjavik Art Museum. For the second year in a row, Samtökin 78 awarded Human Rights prizes, this time to 2 individuals and one organization which was Siðmennt. The introductory words spoken by the representative of Samtökin 78 were especially beautiful and Hope Knútsson, president of Siðmennt accepted the award on behalf of our organization. In her thank you speech, Hope said that Humanists all over the world have always supported the human rights struggle of homosexuals and transgender people and that Samtökin 78 was one of our role models. Hope said that the Siðmennt board members were deeply moved by this recognition. Her speech was received with rousing cheers. The Icelandic media covered this event very well and Siðmennt benefited from the publicity.
